ABOUT RG F.C.
RG F.C. was started out of a passion, love and dedication to football as a whole. Owner Josh Mugenyi has spent his lifetime playing football and futsal at various levels. Although his dream was to make the grade as a pro, his passion extended into his pathway as a football coach, Academy scout and even a degree in football (I know! he couldn’t believe there was a degree in the beautiful game either :p)
For Josh growing up, football was a companion filling a void of Boredom. His reading books were sticker albums. His tactical analysis of football was learned through computer games and by Andy Gray. Weekends were not just about cartoons but regular routines consisting of going to football sessions, watching football Italia and soccer Am. If it wasn’t reading about football it was about watching or playing. Growing up in one-parent household money was often tight, but one Saturday shopping trip after football training changed his life.
His mum would take him to buy his first ever football kit which would turn his love into a dream played out by his imagination turning his garden into Highbury and his local park, South park into his Wembley. He said growing up going to a football game wasn't possible but that one strip brought the pitch closer to home. A very curious and observant kid that loved the fine details of things. To him, the feel of the strip, the prestige and quality of the arsenal crest, the smell and the design up close made professional football a real ambition for him. A boyhood Arsenal fan more than even playing at Highbury, the dream was to wear the kit as a pro.
Collecting football strips as a kid became an obsession and away he would emulate his heroes wherever he went to play football. A new strip for every birthday was a promise from his mum. This soon turned into a promise when any family Would go travelling, a top request on his Christmas list and his main reward for good behaviour by getting anything football related in the discount section of sports stores.
Interested in football history Josh would often seek iconic strips and club merch for his collection. Often prompted by his interest in club badges or club kit designs. He wanted to know about it all. Early Ajax strips from their years dominate in Europe and the occasional Liverpool strip is given to him by family members supporting the club would be part of his earliest collection of strips. Although he may not have been able to articulate it at a young age, it was clear he understood the importance of identity and the pride that came with representing these clubs. He’d dream of playing for Arsenal, Ajax or Liverpool based on the club's prestige, club history and club icons.
Growing up in the first era really marketing football merch as fashion pieces he would often find ways to style his own training kit for sessions or style football gear when out and about as an extension of himself. He talked of small details like Eric Cantona wearing his collar up or Ian Wright tucking in his collar being signatures that to this day transcend and make certain kits iconic. Collecting match magazines, Shoot as well as Arsenal's club magazine he’d enjoy going to the back and looking at all the football merch available to buy. Although he never got anything from those magazines, he remembers the excitement to see all the new designs no matter what the club. This love of football strips and club merch would also give him fond memories of playing grassroots football and his time as a young football scholar trying to press on into the professional game. He always loved to see his new home and away team kit and other apparel he'd get for the season ahead.
Part of a generation inspired by street ball and Nikes scorpion KO, he stands by his words RG F.C. is ‘Culture over trend’ The game inspired him and taught him to dare to dream of being a professional, but the aesthetics of it all made him understand why football is an art.
RG F.C. wants to celebrate eras that have passed and put to the forefront the best of the next generation's culture in football wear. The game has evolved but so has the apparels quality, technology of design and visual artistry. Everyone has a favourite football moment or moment, and the visual is accompanied by many images making it a standout memory. One of the strongest, if not the strongest part will always be the strip and other apparel attached to that moment/season.
